This jewel is ideal for retreats, weddings, or vacation getaways. The Bunkhouse with pool, ping pong, and foosball tables, plus a bunk bed and 2 rollaway beds is next door. Two-thirds of a mile of the upper West Fork of the Bitterroot River flows through the ranch grounds - The Alta Vista is on the banks of the river and has a small pond below where you can witness moose bathing.
The Alta Ranch is a wedding destination. Spectacular mountains and forest are the perfect setting for your special day. Indoor or outdoor options for the ceremony. Pitch a big tent or set up tables under the large hangar for dining and dancing. Creating a magical wedding celebration is a specialty of ours.
Because of its size, the Alta Vista is popular for large family gatherings or reunions. We want you to live like a local while you are here: Explore Skalkaho Falls, just north of Darby, one of western Montana’s “must sees.” The Bitterroot River offers over 76 miles of floatable river, from 6 miles south of Darby to Missoula and 100 miles of fishable river. When the snow flies; the Lost Trail Powder Mountain typically accumulates the most snow depth in Montana. One of the best downhill slopes in the state is nearby. 2 miles away is Painted Rocks Lake (swimming, boating, water skiing, and jet skiing). 4 hours south of Glacier National Park and 6 hours from Yellowstone.
The ranch has 350 acres to roam. Keep your eyes open for moose, elk, deer, eagles, waterfowl, songbirds, and more. Glacier country and the Bitterroot National Forest surrounds you. Our guests enjoy trout fishing and BBQ's on the porch. ATV riding; fire lookouts on Bare Cone and Lookout mountains - all included.

March 2013. This has been a wonderful place to stay for our “homecoming” to the West Fork. We soaked in as much beauty and wildlife as we possibly could during our stay. As we travel back to the Pacific Northwest we leave very grateful for the time we were able to spend here. Thank you Peter and Katrin for your hospitality and graciousness. Alta Ranch is a beautiful gem. The West Fork will always hold a special place in our hearts.
January 2013. My husband and I travel quite a bit from tropical islands to snow covered mountains. We have stayed in $600 a night hotels, but I don’t want to do that anymore. I want to stay here at the Alta Vista summer and winter fall and spring. The people we have talked to are the nicest and friendliest—Montana has Aloha spirit. I have impressed my in-laws tremendously. I’m going to take the credit because I found Alta Ranch. This vacation was everything I wanted—snow, horseback riding, snowmobiling, sledding, a happy and well-rested husband.
